- Challenges Napoleon for control over Animal Farm.
- Intellectual, plans the revolution.
Boxer (horse)
- Represents the working class.
- Dedicated, loyal, trusting.

Squealer (pig)
- Spreads Napoleon’s propaganda.
- Justifies the changing laws and superiority of pigs.
- Takes advantage of the uneducated by complicating language unnecessarily.
Old Major (pig)
- Vision of a socialist utopia inspires the rebellion.
- Represents Karl Marx.

Benjamin (donkey)
- Believes his life will remain unpleasant no matter who is in charge.
- Neutral stance, uninvolved.
- Able to read but does not help the other animals with his skill.
Animalism
A system of thought based on Old Major’s teachings.
Original 7 commandments
1) Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2) Whatever goes on four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3) No animal shall wear clothes.
4) No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5) No animal shall drink alcohol.
6) No animal shall kill any other animal.
7) All animals are equal.
Revised 7 commandments
1) Four legs good two legs better.
2) Pigs think animals on four legs or with wings are inferior.
3) Animals end up wearing clothes.
4) No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.
5) No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.
6) No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.
7) All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.
Fear
Napoleon uses fear to gain power.
- Fear of Jones returning.
- Fear from his dogs.
- Fear of being punished/killed.
Divisions
- Pigs are superior (move into the farmhouse, eat the best food).
- Educated vs uneducated.
