Magnets - Electromagnets Flashcards
What is reactivity?
Reactivityis the tendency of a substance to undergochemicalreaction, either by itself or with other materials, resulting in the transfer of energy
What is an Ore?
Ore is a deposit in Earth’s crust of one or more valuable minerals.
What does extract means?
Extract means to take a substance out of some sort of a mixture. An extraction method is a way to do that.
Why can heating with carbon not be used to extract aluminium from aluminium ores?
Aluminium is too reactive as Aluminium is above carbon in the reactivity series.
“Copper is produced from copper oxide. What type of process is this?
“
Reduction
What does this hazard symbol represent?
This symbol means corrosive. Chemicals with this symbol attack and destroy living tissue, such as skin and bone.
“What is advantage of using Carbon, rather than electrolysis, to extract a metal from its ore?
“
Carbon extraction is cheaper than electrolysis
What do humans use resources for?
Warmth, shelter and food
What are finite resources?
Resources that will run out
What is sustainable development?
Development that meets the needs of the current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Name two new ways of extracting copper from low-grade ores
Phytomining and bioleaching
What is a low grade ore?
Rock with only a small amount of metal compound in it
How is phytomining carried out?
Plants absorb metal compounds, are harvested and then burned to produce ash
How is bioleaching carried out?
Bacteria are used to produce a leachate solution
How can copper be produced from the products of phytomining or bioleaching?
Electrlysis or displacement with scrap iron
