Q

What are magnetic field lines

A

A way of showing a magnetic field the lines always go from north to south and they show which way a force would act on a North Pole of it was put at that point in the field

Q

What will the force be if to like or unlike poles are put near each other

7
Q

How does a compass work

A

A compass contains a tiny bar magnet and the North Pole of the magnet is attracted to the South Pole of any other magnet near it so the compass will point in the direction of the magnetic field it is in

9
Q

What happens to the compass needle when they are not near and magnet and why is this

A

The compass will face north because the earth generates is own magnetic field which shows the inside of the earth must be magnetic

13
Q

What is the force between the two types of magnets

And what happens when you take away the magnetic field

A

Always attractive

When you take away the magnetic field induced magnets quickly lose most of their magnetism

16
Q

What happens if you change the direction of current

And how can u work this out

A

The direction of magnetic field changes

Use this with the right hand thumb rule

17
Q

What is a solenoid and what does it do

A

A solenoid is a coil of wire
And you can increase the strength of a magnetic field that a wire produces by wrapping the wire into a coil called a solenoid
The magnetic field inside the solenoid has the same strength and direction at every point in that region

18
Q

Why does a solenoid increase the strength of magnetic field

A

The field lines around each loop of wire line up with each other and point in the same direction very close to each other so it’s a very strong field

19
Q

What is the magnetic field like outside the solenoid

A

Just like a bar magnet

20
Q

How can you increase the field strength of a solenoid

A

Put a block of iron in the centre of the coil
The iron will become an induced magnet whenever the current us flowing
Stopping the current stops the magnetic field

21
Q

What is a solenoid with an iron core

A

An electromagnet

22
Q

What is an electromagnet

A

A magnet whose magnetic field can turned on or off with an electric current

23
Q

Why are electromagnets useful

A

They can be turned on or off quickly

Can create a varying force

24
Q

What are electromagnets used in

A

Cranes to attract and pick up magnetic materials

Within other circuits to act as switches
