Magnets Flashcards
What are the 2 poles on magnets
North Pole
South Pole
What do magnets produce
A magnetic field
A region where other magnets or magnetic material experience a non- contact force
What are magnetic field lines
A way of showing a magnetic field the lines always go from north to south and they show which way a force would act on a North Pole of it was put at that point in the field
Where is there a strong magnetic field
Closer to the magnet where the magnetic lines are closer together
What will the force be if to like or unlike poles are put near each other
The like poles will repel each other
The unlike poles will attract each other
What do compasses show
The direction of magnetic fields
How does a compass work
A compass contains a tiny bar magnet and the North Pole of the magnet is attracted to the South Pole of any other magnet near it so the compass will point in the direction of the magnetic field it is in
How can you use a compass to show what a magnetic field looks like
Move the compass around the magnet and trace the needles position on some paper
What happens to the compass needle when they are not near and magnet and why is this
The compass will face north because the earth generates is own magnetic field which shows the inside of the earth must be magnetic
What are the two types of magnet
Permanent or induced
What do permanent magnets do
Produce their own magnetic field
What do induced magnets do
Magnetic materials that turn into a magnet when they’re put into magnetic fields
What is the force between the two types of magnets
And what happens when you take away the magnetic field
Always attractive
When you take away the magnetic field induced magnets quickly lose most of their magnetism
How is a magnetic field created in a wire
When a current flows through the wire
What is the magnetic field around a wire when a current flows though it
It is made up of concentric circles perpendicular to the wire (the wire in the centre)
