Magnetism Flashcards
1
Q
Define magnetic induction
A
Magnetic induction is the process where a magnetic material becomes a magnet when placed close to a strong magnet or within a current carrying solenoid
2
Q
Define a magnetic field
A
A magnetic field is a region in which the force of magnetism acts
2
Q
How to magnetise magnetic materials
A
- Stroking
- Use direct current
3
Q
How to demagnetise magnetic materials
A
- Heating a magnet then letting it cool in the east-west direction causes ‘tiny magnets’ to lose their alignment
- Hammering a magnet in the east-west direction alters alignment of ‘tiny magnets’
- Put magnet in solenoid in east-west direction, connect solenoid to a.c. supply then withdraw magnet when a.c. still flowing
