Current of electricity Flashcards
Define electric current
Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charges
Define conventional current
Conventional current is the flow of positive charges from the positive to the negative terminal
Define Ohm’s Law
Ohm’s Law states that current passing through a metallic conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, provided that physical conditions like temperature remain constant
Define electron flow
Electron flow is the flow of electrons from the negative to the positive terminal
Define electromotive force
E.m.f. of an electrical source is the work done by the source in driving a unit charge around a complete circuit
Define potential difference
Potential difference across a component is the work done to drive a unit charge through the component
Define resistance
Resistance of a component is the ratio of the potential difference across it to the current flowing through it
What are the factors affecting wire resistance
- Length
- Cross-sectional area
- Material
- Temperature
What are conductors that obey Ohm’s Law known as
Ohmic conductors
What is a semiconductor diode
- Allows electric current to flow in 1 direction only
- Only conducts current what it is forward-biased
What is the use of a semiconductor diode
Convert from an alternating current to a direct current
