Magnetism Flashcards
What are the 2 poles for a magnet?
North and South
What happens when you get 2 different poles
next to each other?
The magnets attract each other
What happens when you get 2 similar poles next to
each other?
The magnets repel each other
What do the magnetic field lines look like around a
bar magnet?
Field Lines from the ends of the bar go away from the bar.
Field Lines from the top and bottom of the bar go from negative to positive
What happens when a compass is near a magnet?
They align up with the magnetic field lines
Where is the magnetic field stronger for a bar
magnet? How can you tell this?
At the poles. The field lines are closer together
What else has a magnetic field
The Earth
Dram what shape the magnetic field is around a current carrying wire?
Current is straight vertical line. Magnetic field is circles at 90 degrees around the line. each circle getting bigger
What is an electromagnet?
A strong, electrical magnet
What do you need to make an electromagnet?
A magnetic bar (core) with wire wrapped around it
How can you make an electromagnet stronger?
Increase the current or loops of wire wrapped
around the core
Name 2 differences between bar magnets and
electromagnets
Bar magnets are permanent magnets.
Electromagnets are stronger
What is an electrical insulator?
Something that has high resistance and does
not let a lot of electricity through easily
negative pole
north
positive pole
south
