-must be 18-74 years old, live in or near the area, have 6 personal qualities
-good character, understanding and communication, social awareness, maturity and sound temperament, sound judgement, commitment and reliability
explain how a person is selected to be a mag
there are 7 steps:
-apply via website or post
-local advisory committee creates short list and checks references
-interviews are arranged
-2 interviews happen: examine character and practice scenarios
-reviewed by committee to ensure a balanced bench
-committee submit their recommendations to lord chief justice
-lord chief justice makes decisions
explain the qualification and selection process to be a mag

explain the jurisdiction of the magistrates court
-pre trial mags;
.issue warrants and summons
.extend time a place can hold a convict
.apply for bail or remand
-during trial;
.hear summary and triable either way offences
.listen to evidence and take legal advice from court clerk
.reach verdict
-post trial;
.sentence the defendant if found guilty
.transfer case to crown court
.can hear appeals against sentence or conviction in crown court with a qualified judge
