Heka
“Magic” God Heka is the son (and Ba-spirit) of Re, the energy or force of creation by the sun-god
Akhu
“spells” magical power associated with the divine connections of the reborn dead in the duat
Bau
Divine “manifestation” or power. Associated with both humans and deities
Natural Magic
use of natural cosmic forces such as astral/celestial or earth energy to influence one’s immediate surroundings
Demonic Magic
use of rituals and spells to tap into powers of supernatural beings (gods, demons, spirits and the dead)
Sympathetic Magic
Use of divine symbols to transfer aspects of religious myths and divine powers to human experience
Apotropaic Magic
Use of objects (amulets), symbols and rituals to ward off evil forces of chaos/Isfet as particularly exemplified by the serpent Apophis (the archenemy of the sun god)
Prophylactic Magic
Preventative magical practices to establish a protective boundary against evil or destructive forces (demons, disease, etc.)
Bes
The protective “bearded lion-dwarf” who is especially connected with protective magic and apotropaic symbolism
Bes-Pantheos
“Bes of all the gods” one example of a pantheistic deity (combining creative and protective attributes into a single magical deity)
Tawaret
“The Great She-One” The pregnant hippo goddess who is protector of pregnant women and young children. Exemplifies use of fearsome creatures to combat potential threats
Tutu
Sphinx-griffin god of the Greco-Roman period. “The one who keeps enemies at a distance”
Lector priest
Educated “reading” priests who were versed in temple rituals and had access and use of temple libraries (like the “house of life”, temple repositories of religious and magical texts)
Sem-priest
A form of priest commonly associated with the use of the leopard skin cloaks. Sometimes suggested as a residual symbol of shamanism in early Egypt (individuals who take on animal attributes and can communicate with the supernatural world)
