Macular degeneration Flashcards
What are the two types of Age related macular degeneration?
Dry - no proliferation
Wet - vascular proliferation
What is Wet ARMD?
new blood vessels grow from the choroid under the retina and leak fluid and blood - leading to a loss of vision
What is the presentation of Wet ARMD?
sudden vision loss - over 2 days
often central vision loss
distortion
What is the signs of Wet ARMD?
haemorrhage
exudates (of protein) - yellow flecks
What is Dry ARMD?
build up of waste products under the retina - usually drusden (by product of the pigmented epithelium)
this stops nutrients diffucing through which leads to the outer retina being devoid of nutrients
What is the presentation of Dry ARMD?
gradual decline in vision
central vision missing
What are the signs of Dry ARMD?
drusden
atrophic patches of retina
choroid blood vessels
What is the treatment for Dry ARMD?
no cure - help with vision aids
