Macrophages Flashcards
What type of cells are macrophages? What are they derived from?
Phagocytic leukocytes
Blood monocytes
Where do macrophages reside?
In tissues (under skin, in lungs and around intestines)
Are macrophages professional phagocytes?
Yes
What are the 3 activation states of macrophages?
- Resting
- Primed
- Hyperactive
What is job of macrophages in resting state? Do they contain lots of MHC II?
Collects debris from tissues from phagocytosis and eliminates apoptotic cells
Contains very little MHC II
Do macrophages express MHC II?
Yes
What is job of macrophages in primed state? Do they express MHC II?
Take up larger objects by phagocytosis
Expresse increased levels of MHC II
What are macrophages primed by?
IFN-y (cytokine interferon gamma)
What is the cytokine ‘interferon gamma’ produced by?
Nk cells and T helper cells
How do macrophages become hyperactive?
Stimulated with both IFN-y and LPS
What is LPS produced by?
Gram-negative bacteria
What is function of hyperactive macrophages?
Stop proliferation, become larger and increase their rate of phagocytosis
They also produce cytokines
What cytokines do hyperactive macrophages produce?
TNF and IL-1
