Classes of Antibodies Flashcards
What are the 5 classes of immunoglobulins?
IgM, IgG, IgA, IgE and IgD
What is the structure of IgM? How is this structure useful?
Pentamer - Large number of antigen bindings sites
When is IgM released?
First molecule released after pathogen encounter (release in 1ary response, disappears after 10 days, limited release in 2ary response)
What are the main functions of IgM?
- Kills bacteria (binding induces Fc region to activate complement pathway)
- Activates macrophages to phagocytose pathogens
- Serves as B cell receptor
When is IgG released?
Main antibody of secondary response and late in primary response
What is structure of IgG?
Monomer
How abundant is IgG?
Most abundant antibody in blood
How does IgG assist in foetus protection?
Is only antibody that can pass through placenta, providing immunological protection for foetus
Also secreted into mother’s milk
What are main functions of IgG?
- Activate complement cascade
- Trigger macrophages (Fc region binds to macrophages)
- Neutralises toxins
- Opsonisation
Where does IgG enter?
Tissue space
What is main function of IgE monomer?
Antibody of allergy and antiparasitic activity
How is IgE involved in allergic reactions?
Stimulates mast cells to release histamine as Fc region binds to mast cells
How is histamine involved in allergic reactions?
Causes dilation and increased permeability of blood vessels leading to symptoms
What is main function of IgD monomers?
Immature B cell receptors - found in B cell membrane
What is main function of IgA secretory dimer?
Main component of mucus, tears, saliva to protect entrance of pathogens
