Macromolecules (Part 3 - Nucleic Acid) Flashcards
What are the monomers of nucleic acid (DNA and RNA)
Nucleotides
What are nucleotides made up of?
Nitrogen base
Pentose (5 carbon) sugar
Phosphate
What does mRNA do?
directs the synthesis of protein through the process of translation
(the complementary code for proteins)
What does tRNA do?
Acts as a delivery vehicle for amino acids in protein synthesis (translation)
What does rRNA do?
makes up the structure of ribosomes
How can purines and pyrimidines be differentiated?
Pyrimidines have one ring while Purines hove two rings
Where do nucleotides connect?
The pentose sugar of one nucleotide connects to the phosphate of another
What is the bond between both nitrogen bases in a DNA double helix
hydrogen bond
How many hydrogen bonds are between “A and T” and “G and C”
2 hydrogen bonds between A and T
3 hydrogen bonds between “G and C”
What nitrogen base is exclusive to RNA?
U - Uracil
What nitrogen base is exclusive to DNA?
T - Thymine
