Macromolecules (Part 2 - Lipids & Proteins) Flashcards
What are fats made up of?
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids
Are fats hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Hydrophobic
What are the 3 main functions of fats?
1) Energy storage
2) Protects internal organs
3) Prevents heat loss
Do saturated fats contain a double C (C=C) bond and what does it say about its characteristics?
No
It forms straight chains and is solid at room temperature
Do unsaturated fats contain a double C (C=C) bond and what does it say about its characteristics?
Yes
It forms a bend in the molecular structure and is liquid at room temperature
What are lipids made up of?
1 glycerol, 2 fatty acids and a phosphate
What part of a phospholipid is hydrophobic and what part is hydrophilic?
Fatty acid chain is hydrophobic and the phosphate group head is hydrophilic
What are steroids made up of?
4 fused carbon rings
What is an example of a steroid?
Cholesterol
What are the monomers that makeup proteins?
Amino Acids
What is a polymer of amino acids?
A polypeptide
What is a protein made up of?
One of more polypeptides which are made of of many amino acids
What are the bonds between amino acids called?
Peptide bonds
How are amino acid bonds formed?
Dehydration synthesis
