Macromolecules of the cell - Nucleic acids structure and function Flashcards
Whats the main role of dna in the cell ?
Is the long term storage of information
What is DNA ?
Genetic instructions for the development and function of living things
What are the 3 structure of DNA ?
1- BASE
2- PHOSPHATE
3- SUGAR - deoxyribose
What is a nucleoside ?
Name given to a base linked to a sugar
What is chargaffs 1st rule ?
That in any double-stranded DNA molecule, and by extension any organism possessing double-stranded DNA: the amount of guanine should be equal to the amount of cytosine and the amount of adenine should be equal to the amount of thymine.
What are the 3 types of DNA ?
- SINGLE STRANDED DNA -
Some viruses - DOUBLE STRANDED LOOP -
Viruses, bacteria, mitochondria, chloroplasts - DOUBLE STRANDED LINEAR -
Most eukaryotic cells double stranded
what is a chromatin ?
DNA plus protein
What is the 5 differences between DNA and RNA ?
- RNA is less stable
- RNA is single-stranded
- Therefore RNA can fold into a variety of shapes
- RNA is required for protein synthesis
- RNA also has structural, regulatory and catalytic roles
What is mRNA ?
- Many hundreds of different types in each cell
- Each only as a few copies
- Very few uncommon bases
What is tRNA ?
- Smallest RNA - 75-90 nucleotides
- Contains 10 percent uncommon bases
- Many types within the cell, each in multiple copies
- Common structure called - cloverleaf structure
