Macromolecules I: carbon, carbohydrates, and lipids Flashcards
Carbohydrates
A sugar or one of its dimers or polymers
Lipids
Any of a group of large biological molecules. Phospholipids, fats, steroids.
Proteins
A biologically functional molecule made of polypeptides. Monomer is amino acids.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid.
Made of a nitrogenous base, a deoxyribose sugar, and a phosphate group
Functional Group
A specific configuration of atoms attached to the carbon skeletons of organic molecules involved in chemical reactions.
Polymer
A chain of monomers
Monosaccharides
Monomer of carbohydrates
Disaccharides
Two monosaccharides connected by a glycosidic linkage
Polysaccharides
A chain of monomers-monosaccharides
Saturated Fats
Fats saturated with hydrogen
Ex: C5H10
Unsaturated Fats
Fats unsaturated with hydrogen. Double bonds cause kinks that make it hard for these fats to freeze
Phospholipids
A kind of lipid where a phosphate head takes the place of one of the three fatty acids on the glycerol. The main component of the semi-permeable membrane
Steroids
A type of lipid where the carbon skeleton is composed of four fused rings and a multitude of functional groups
