Atoms, Molecules, and Water Flashcards
Hydrogen Bond
An intermolecular bond/force between a partially positive hydrogen and a partially negative O, N, or F.
Covalent Bond
An intramolecular force between nonmetals in which there is sharing of electrons.
Ionic Bond
An intramolecular force between a metal and nonmetal in which electrons are transferred
Atoms
The smallest unit of chemistry. Makes up molecules.
Molecules
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
Element
Any substance that cannot be broken down by chemical reactions
Compound
A molecule of two or more atoms. Can be made with different elements.
Hydrophilic
Water loving
Hydrophobic
(of a molecule) to repel water; Water-Fearing
Hydration Shell
The sphere of water molecules around a dissolved ion
Solvent
The dissolving agent of a solution
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances
pH
A measure of hydrogen ion concentration. -log[H+]
Buffer
Something that resists a change in pH
