Macromolecules Flashcards
An introduction to the 4 major macromolecules of life. Most of biochemistry involves the creation or breakdown of these 4 macromolecules.
What is a macromolecule (in general)?
Macromolecules are the basic building blocks of our bodies. They are polymers made up of covalently bonded monomers.
How do macromolecules interact with each other?
Macromolecules interact with other macromolecules through noncovalent ionic
bonds, hydrogen bonds, van der Waals interactions, or hydrophobic interactions.
Name the 4 major macromolecules and their subunits.
What is the function of proteins?
Many functions. Proteins are workhorses. Proteins serve as structural support, biochemical catalysts, hormones, enzymes, building blocks, and initiators of cellular death.
What is the function of lipids?
Provide a slow source of energy
What is the function of nucleotides?
Storing and transmitting genetic information
What is the function of Polysaccharides?
Provide a quick source of energy
