-seemed to be in control of affairs
-used the media and the new world of TV to his advantage
-had a flair for presentation

what were his policies/decisions?
-oversaw the 300,000 houses scheme
-created system of 3 types of schools
-social reforms such as clean air act of 1957 and the homicide act of 1957 (restricted when the death penalty would be imposed)
what were his drawbacks?
-began to lose his political touch
-radically reshuffled cabinet by sacking 1/3rd of it (night of the long knives)
-married into aristocracy - out of date

-his government presided over a real change in living standards, opportunities and freedoms
-up until 1960 he represented the boom of affluent society
