what were the causes of the korean war?
-two separate governments in Korea: North was occupied by Russia and South was occupied by USA
-each gov. thought they were legitimate
what were the events of the korean war?
-1950 = forces from north korea (backed by USSR + china) invaded the south
-UN forces sent to combat invasion
-GB sent over 90,000 soldiers
-heavy fighting resulted in a stalemate
-Korea was split into North and South Korea

-demonstrated how Britain was still keen to be involved in foreign affairs

-further proved that America was the greater world power as they sent the most troops (almost 2 million)

what were the causes of the suez crisis?
-Nasser emerged as nationalistic leader of Egypt - GB see him as a threat
-GB + USA previously planned to invest in Aswan Dam - vital for oil shipments and trade link between europe and asia
-Nasser announced nationalisation of dam/suez canal company
-concerns Nasser was leading an anti-british movement in middle east
what were the events of the suez crisis?
-israeli troops landed in egypt (excuse of self defence - Israel = on the side of GB and france)
-GB and france issued ultimatum to both sides - withdraw forces from canal, or they will interfere
-Nasser refused
-GB + french aircraft bombed egypt
-GB, france and israel meet in secret and plan for israel to invade egypt
-GB and france invade and overthrow nasser
-egyptians blocked suez canal

-ceasefire eventually agreed
