when was Eden PM?
1955-1957
what were his leadership qualities/style?
-anxious to make decisions
-wasn’t knowledgable on economic issues
-was more used to foreign affairs than domestic ones
-sincere, principled, had integrity
-very popular and seen as a good guy
results of 1955 election:
conservatives increase their majority to 60 seats
his policies and decisions:
-aimed to prevent industrial conflict
-made Butler chancellor and Macmillan foreign secretary
-tried to move Macmillan from foreign office to treasury which caused conflict
his main drawback:
-suez crisis
-this was an Anglo-french attack on Egypt, after Nasser planned to nationalise the Aswan dam when Britain had withdrawn funding for it due to alleged ties with soviet union
-they didn’t inform US, so this weakened their special relationship
-he came under heavy attack by Labour and the press
-caused a rebellion by conservative MPs (led by heath who opposed action during suez crisis
-he resigned in 1957 due to this national humiliation and his damaged reputation
