MacGregor's X & Y Theory Flashcards
Theory X Manager
Authoritarian leadership style characterised as demanding, no praise, not worried about staff welfare and results driven.
Theory Y Managers
Enlightened leardership style characterised as open minded, enables growth and development, make a friendly environment and encourages participation.
Theory X Workers
The assumption is they dislike work, are lazy, dislike responsibility, and must be paid to do the work.
Theory Y Workers
The assumption is that they like the work, are creative, seek responsibility, and are self-directed.
Intrinsic Motivation
Comes from inside the person. Example: Pride, interest, achievement and curiosity
Extrinsic Motivation
Comes from outside the person. Example: Grades, punishment, praise and money
Advantages of X & Y Theory
Many workplaces still view workers as Theory X oriented. Identifying this can help them change.
Can be used to develop motivational techniques
Disadvantages of X & Y Theory
Doesn’t account for the complexity of human behaviour.
Not everyone can be motivated by the job they do.
X & Y are extremes and most people will fall somewhere in the middle.
Limitation of Theory X
Creates and authoritarian environment.
Once people have enough money it stops being a good motivator.
Limitation of Theory Y
Some workers want and need guidance.
It is imposible to have a perfect environment.
