what is the dagger a symbol for?

A

violence, murder and possibly the influence of the witches as they could have sent it to tempt macbeth.

when macbeth can see the dagger before him why can he see the dagger, how is it placed and what is it there for?

A

hallucinating. handle of dagger leading him towards murder or warning him against it. macbeth is tormented and is convincing himself into killing duncan.
