Advantages of Peripheral Nerve Block
Maintenance of consciousness
continued presence of protective upper airway reflexes
Avoidance of NMBD’s
Disadvantage of Peripheral Nerve blocks
unpredictable attainment of adequate sensory and motor anesthesia for performance of the surgery
Success of Peripheral Nerve block depends on
skill of provider
patient cooperation
Advantages of spinal over general anesthesia
reduced stress response to surgery less blood loss (ie hip surgery) less incidence of DVT less pulmonary complications less cardiac complications better in OB - less med admin to mother & fetus
