Why do we take a systematic approach to MI?
To ensure any disease or defect is located and reduce risk
What are the 4 keys to taking a systematic approach to MI?
- Same inspection sequence
- Senses: Sight, touch, smell
- Incise tissues/organs
- Communicate between inspectors
J&D: Acute and systemic
Condemn all
J&D: Acute without obvious signs of systemic (in doubt)

J&D: Acute localised
Condemn affected part
J&D: Chronic
Petfood, otherwise condemn (All pus = condemn)
J&D: Generalised
Petfood, otherwise condemn all
Options for J&D?
- Pass for human consumption
- Retain on immediate retain rail
- Retain for vet disposition
- Petfood
- Condemn
How do we identify a condemned carcass?
Single slash each side
How do we identify a petfooded carcass?
Two slashes each side (sometimes with a black ink stamp)
What is the lighting requirement for inspection?
750 Lux
Define the term palpation
Applying sufficient pressure with the whole hand and fingers to detect any deep-seated lesions that are not detectable by palpation
What disease indicator tickets would be issued for a carcass with contamination, a bruise and pleurisy?
CONTAM, WB and PLU
State the use of the other causes ticket
Any condition that does not have a ticket allocated, e.g. melanosis, jaundice, scar tissue
Why do carcasses condemned on the main chain require inspection to be completed?
To record any other diseases it may of had
