M3.2 Information Flashcards
How does Gibson and Mitchell define the Information Service?
Gibson and Mitchell (1995) define the Information Service as an activity whereby descriptive materials and media are accumulated, organized, and disseminated through individual advising or counseling or through planned group activities.
What does the Information Service provide?
The service provides students with personal-social information that will help them develop their personality and social life; with educational-academic information that would help them select the proper academic setting and program, knowing the requirements and the opportunities available; and with vocational-occupational information that would help them learn about the world of work and careers so that they can make appropriate decisions that will prepare them for the future.
Where is the Information Service collected from?
Through the Information Service information is collected from the bigger environment outside the clients to enable them to make informed judgments.
How does the Information Service help clients?
This service helps Clients
- get a wide range of information from diverse sources
- discover more possibilities than had already been thought about
- weigh pros and cons of each possibility
- make an informed decision on the matter at hand
How does the Information Service help counselors?
The service helps Counselors in that it
- provides a variety of information that counselors alone cannot give
- extends information to a greater number of students even without individual contact
- increases and updates the counselor’s own knowledge as a basis for guiding clients
How important is information in helping the clients?
Really important. Nobody can make appropriate decisions without the pertinent information. Most of the time, clients are unable to handle their difficulties because they lack information. For such clients, the battle is won once the information is available.
On the other hand, there may be clients who only need to be guided in the use of information. When there is a comprehensive, systematic, updated and relevant Information Service, face to face counseling can be reduced by half. Counselors n o longer need to spend precious time disseminating the information that has been made available in print, through symposia and other media which target a bigger population.
What are the Kinds of Information/Methods of Dissemination in the Information Service?
- Personal-Social
- Academic-Educational
- Vocational-Occupational
What does the personal-social cover?
This has to do with how one can improve oneself or how one can improve one’s relationship with others. Methods of dissemination: group guidance/classroom guidance/homeroom guidance sessions, workshops, films, lectures, seminars, panel discussions, dialogues, self-help books/magazines, guest speakers
What does the Academic-Educational cover?

The Information Service can have for a target audience any or all of the sectors in the school.
