M15.10 Lubrication Systems Flashcards
What is the main function of the lubrication system?
. Distributes oil to the engine bearing components and gear boxes
What lubrication systems do most turbine engines use?
A self contained dry sump lubrication system
What is the oil revisor and supply system also called?
. Pressure oil system
Where is the supply filter located?
Downstream of the supply pump which removes any fod
What does the supply filter prevent regarding the nozzle??
Prevents blockage of oil nozzle
What is the purpose of the scavenged system??
. It’s part of the every day dry sumo lubrication system, and returns the oil from bearing compartments and gearboxes to oil tanks
By having a scavenge system what does this prevent?
Accumulation of oil in bearings and gearboxes
What does the vent system do?
Releases air from lubrication systems to the atmosphere
How many scavenge pumps are there per line??
. One
What does the oil monitoring system do?
Measures and indicates oil quantity, oil pressure and oil temperature
What are the 5 different types of sensors??
. Oil quantity sensor
. Oil pressure sensor
. Oil temperature sensor
. Low oil pressure switch
. Filter clogging switch
What do mechanical clogging indicators do?
. Indicate a clogged filter when the engine has stopped
What is another name for mechanical clogging indicators?
Pop out indicators
How can contamination be checked?
By inspecting filters and using magnetic chip detectors
Where are magnetic chip detectors installed??
In individual scavenge lines of each sump which makes it easy to isolate source of contamination
What is a main advantage of magnetic chip detectors in accordance to maintenance??
They are easily removed for inspection
Where is the oil quantity transmitter installed??
At the top of the oil tank which allows the transmitter to be changed without draining the tank
What are the two types of transmitters?
. Capacitance
. Reed switch type
What is the oil pressure transmitter connected to??
. Oil supply line and to the oil tank vent oil line
How does the oil pressure transmitter work?
. Senses pressure difference between total oil pressure in oil supply line and the vent pressure in oil tank
What does the low oil pressure switch do??
If oil pressure deaconesses below the limit the switch closes and signal is sent to flight warning computer and appears in display unit cockpit.
What are two types of oil temperature sensors?
. Thermocouple
. Thermistor
The engine low oil pressure warning is always accompanied by what??
An acoustic warning in the cockpit
What does SOAP stand for??
Spectrometric oil analysis program
What is the function of SOAP??
. Find out about internal wear if lubricated engine components
What size particles can SOAP find??
. Particles so small that can’t even be caught my oil filters
. 0.001mm - 0.02mm
When are oil samples taken for soap??
From the oil tank at regular intervals and sent to the laboratory for analysis
What size particles does the scavenge system detect??
. Large particle sizes of more than 0.015mm
What is the main problem with scavenge systems?
. The filter is not changed very often and filter inspection takes a lot of time
Why are magnetic chip detectors better?
. Easier
. less time consuming to get the condition of the oil content
. Easily removed and checked
Briefly what do magnetic chip detectors do?
. It catches metal particles which are attracted to the magnet.
How does an electric magnetic chip detector work?
. The chip detector has two magnets at the tip
. The restistanve between the two magnetic is monitored by the electronic control unit.
. resistance decreases when particles connect with the magnet.
. When resistance goes past a certain point the electronic control unit sends a message for post flight report.
Where is the oil tank located?
. Above the level of the gearbox
To prevent slow from the oil tank to the gear box due to siphon effect, what is in place?
. Anti- siphon device is fitted
On engines without an anti- siphon device, what should you do?
. Check the oil quantity between 5-20 minutes after the engine is shut down when all the oil is in the tank
Where can the oil quantity be checked
. At sight quages on the oil tanks
. ECAM/ EICAS
Where do you refill the oil?
. Via the oil tank filler port
. You must wait 5 minutes after the engine is shut down before you can open the oil tank filler cap
What are the two methods of oil refilling?
. Oil cans
. Oil servicing system
What type of system do oil cans use?
Gravity refuelling
What type of system do oil servicing system use?
Pressure refilling
What should you always ensure when topping up the oil?
. That it’s the correct type and the same manufacture
What should you do regarding the tech log when refilling the oil?
. Enter the quantity of oil added
What saftey precautions should you do when SOAP sampling?
. Use a new plastic bottle to prevent contamination
. Wait at least 5 mins after engine is shut down
. Wear gloves to protect your hands
. Close the bottle and label it
What is significant about a magnetic chip detector inspection?
. Maintenance staff must only check 1 engine detector and a cross check by a second mechanic to reduce working errors
What are the two seals used in chip detectors?
. Reusable seal
. O ring
On some some magnetic chip detectors they have 2 O-rings, what needs to happen??
. The old O rings must be replaced with new ones to help prevent leakages
