What scales can be used to measure a patients anxiety?
Modified Corah dental anxiety scale
Modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS)

What must be taken into consideration when assessing patients for sedation?
Medical history, dental history, social history
What does ASA stand for?
American Society of Anaesthesiologists
What is the ASA classification?
Physical status classification system
When was the ASA classification created?
1941
What is ASA 1?
Healthy patient - no systemic disease
What is ASA 2?
Healthy patient - mild systemic disease. Extreme anxiety/fear
What is ASA 3?
Systemic disease that limits activity but not incapacitating
What is ASA 4?
Incapacitating disease that is life threatening. Fatigue/shortness of breath when seated
What is ASA 5?
Terminal condition. Not expected to survive
What is ASA 6?
Declared brain dead. Organs being removed for donor purposes
What classification of patients can be treated in practice?
Class 1 & 2
What should a physical examination include?
Blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, height, weight, oxygen saturation, temperature
How would you work out a patients BMI?
Patients weigh (kg) / height (m2)
What BMI would be classed as underweight?
Less than 18.5
What BMI is classed as normal weight?
18.5 - 24.9
What BMI is classed as overweight?
25.0 - 29.9
What BMI is classed as Class 1 obesity?
30.0 - 34.9
What BMI is classed as Class 2 obesity?
35.0 - 39.9
What BMI is classed as Class 3 obesity?
40 or higher
What ASA class would you be in with a blood pressure of 140/90 or less?
Class 2
What ASA classification would have a blood pressure between 160/95 to 199/114
Class 3
What classification would have a blood pressure over 200/115?
Class 4
In terms of blood pressure who can be treated in practice?
Patients with blood pressure below 160/95 mmHg
