MUSCULAR ACHES & PAINS (MAPs)

Cause: Postural / usage / congenital
can be stress or infection related too
Associated w/ weakness in other areas eg kidney - back, menstrual - abdomen. Use of essential oils should reflect this.
Standard ‘muscle mix’ blends include ANALGESICS, RUBEFACIENTS
base oil 2.5% blend of Ginger, Rosemary, Nutmeg -
MUSCLE SPASMS & CRAMPS

Spasms are involuntary contractions of voluntary muscles
Cramps are acute, intense spasms
Often sports injury related or result of sudden movement.
Also occurs in degenerative conditions
RUBEFACIENT, ANALGESIC
Base oil 2.5% full body or 5% local application in oil, balm or cream - Lavandin, Bay Laurel, Ginger, Sweet Marjoram
SPRAINS & STRAINS

Sprains - connective tissue damage
Strains - muscle damage
Ice pack - immediate treatment
then RICE.
ANALGESICS, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, Cooling!
Cold compress for 20 minutes (1 drop each of Peppermint & German Chamomile in iced water muslin on top, wring, place on injury - cling film to joint if needed. Repeat as needed.
Can use warmth on strains after 12 hours.
OSTEOARTHRITIS
What is it?

Degeneration of weight bearing joints through wear & tear. Local inflammations and muscles spasms around affected joints. worse in cold, damp weather.
May be food triggers for inflammation.
Gentle exercise is essential.
ANALGESIC, RUBEFACIENT, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
2.5% in base oil full body massage
5% local application in balm, cream or oil
Plai, Lemongrass, ginger
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Auto-immune disease that causes degeneration of joints - commonest in fingers. But affects whole system with flu-like symptoms, tiredness, pain. Higher incidence in women.
Diet triggers? Supplements, stress management may all be helpful.
Chronic condition - treat client not condition!
Joints in flare - massage contraindicated - cold compress or 5% home blend for local application with ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, ANALGESIC EOs eg Peppermint, German Chamomile
Massage rest of body (if comfortable & no fever present) with TONIC, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY & PSYCH NOURISHING EOs eg Rose, Frankincense, Plai (Nutmeg, Lavandin)
GOUT

XS Uric acid condition - crystallised deposits form around joints - usually big toe. Commoner in men.
Linked to over-rich diet / alcohol intake. Also hereditary factors & side effect of some medications.
ID & eliminate foods, increase hydration is essential to aid kidneys.
Joints in flare - massage contraindicated - cold compress with ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, ANALGESIC - 1 drop each Lavender True & Yarrow
Full body massage to aid kidney function to process XS uric acid w/ DETOXIFYING, DIURETIC oils
Juniper, Rosemary verbenone (UG tonic), Grapefruit or Lemon
FRACTURES

After cast removal use RUBEFACIENT oils to improve blood supply. Ginger, Rosemary
Ginger root is bone regenerator.
Use as part of 5% blend to massage exposed distal end of limb in cast.
OSTEOPOROSIS

Decrease in bone density. Commonly post menopausal women. Also hereditary, dietary & lifestyle factors.
Decrease smoking, caffeine, alcohol
Increase weight bearing exercise, Ca & Mg, EFA supplements
Chronic condition - massage for support & supple musculature.
Gentle - fragile bone at spine, hip & wrists.
ANALGESIC & RUBEFACIENT EOs also wellbeing & aromatic preferences of importance.

FIBROMYALGIA
What is it?

? Its own condition. Known as a symptom of ME/CFS/Post viral syndrome.
Chronic pain - musculoskeletally
Diagnosed by 11 out of 18 tender points registering as painful.
Massage helpful - light, gentle, flowing to relax & destress.
ANALGESIC, RUBEFACIENT as well as Psychologically supportive.
If linked w/ ME - possible sensitivity to aromas - decrease blend to 1% & use fewer oils 1 or 2 only (Nutmeg & Sweet Orange)

ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS

Spinal degeneration & arthritis. Muscle spasm & stiffness of surrounding joints
Higher incidence in young men.
A morning massage w/ ANALGESICS, RUBEFACIENTS & ANTISPASMODICS (Rosemary CT Verbenone, Bay Laurel, Ginger) followed by exercise can be beneficial.
Evening baths with RELAXING EOs eg Lavender 4d, Vetiver 2d
