What rights and responsibilities do the workforce have under the OSH Act?
Everybody has a right to a safe and healthy workplace and to come home safely
All parties at the workplace have a role in ensuring safety at the workplace
What is the employers duty of care under the OSH Act?
To provide and maintain a safe working environment as far as practicable
What is the employees duty of care under the OSH Act?
To work safely and not affect the safety and health of others
What is asbestos?
A naturally occurring mineral, typically found in rock, sediment or soil.
It has strong fibres that are heat resistant and have good insulating properties.
Due to its properties, it was seen as being useful for building products
When was asbestos banned in Australia?
A total ban on asbestos came into effect in Australia on 31 December 2003, making it illegal to make it, use it or import it from another country
What are the dangers of asbestos?
Undisturbed asbestos is not typically considered dangerous.
Once disturbed, it releases tiny particles into the air that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Once breathed in, these particles can lodge themselves into the lungs and cause cancer.
What are the most common types of asbestos?
Three most common types that were widely used:
- White Asbestos (Chrysotile)
- Blue Asbestos (Crocidolite)
- Brown / Grey Asbestos (Amosite)
How would you manage the risk of asbestos?
1) Identify asbestos and asbestos containing material and record it on an asbestos register
2) Assess the risk of exposure to airborne asbestos
3) Eliminate or minimise the risk associated with asbestos by implementing control measures
4) Review control measures to make sure they are effective
What is the RICS Guidance Note, Surveying Safely?
The guidance note sets out basic, good practice principles for the management of health and safety for RICS regulated firms and RICS members.
It sets out principles for those engaged in the build environment as property professionals and includes health and safety responsibilities at a corporate level and at the level of the individual RICS member.
