What is The Privacy Act 1988?

A

Introduced to promote and protect the privacy of individuals and regulate how Australian Government Agencies and organisations with a turnover of more than $3m handle personal information.

The Privacy Act includes 13 Australian Privacy Principles, a breach of these can result in penalties

A

Provides individuals the right to request access to documents from AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.

This can include documents containing personal information or other information such as:

  • Information about policy making
  • Administrative decision making
  • Government service delivery

Some documents are exempt from the act such as documents affecting:

  • National security
  • Defence or international relations
  • Law enforcement
  • Public safety
  • Cabinet documents
