Lymphomas Flashcards
How do you differentiate between Hodgkins and non-hodgkins lymphoma?
Hodgkins has:
- Reed-Sternberg cells (with cell markers CD15+ and CD30+)
Which lymphoma is more common? Hodgkins or non-hodg?
Non-hodgkins (60%)
Which lymphoma presents with starry sky appearance?
Burkitt’s lymphoma
lymphocytes interspersed with macrophages
What are the cytological markers of Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
Histo marker?
Cyto: CD15+ and CD30+
Histo: Reed-Sternberg cells, and high mitotic index
(binucleate/lobed “owl eye” cells)
** CMV also has cells that look like “owl eyes”
What is Burkitt’s lymphoma associated with?
EBV!!
Chromosomal change in Burkitt’s lymphoma?
Translocation: t (8;14)
(c-myc and heavy chain, respectively)
–> 8;22, and 2, 8 can also cause Burkitt’s
Most common adult Non-Hodgkins lymphoma?
Diffuse large B cell
–> Clinically aggressive; high grade
Mantle cell lymphoma cell marker and chromosomal change.
CD 5+, chromosome 11 and 14 translocation
Chromosomal change in follicular lymphoma:
Chromosome 14 to 18 translocation, BCL gene (t 14;18)
–> inhibits apoptosis
What are the non-hodgkins T-cell lymphomas?
- adult T cell lymphoma
- mycosis fungoides (sezary syndrome)
Chromosomal change in marginal lymphoma:
t 11; 18
Chromosomal change in mantle lymphoma:
t 11;14
–> very aggressive form
What are the subtypes of Hodgkins lymphoma?
Which has best prognosis?
Most common?
- nodular sclerosis –> most COMMON
- lymphocyte rich –> BEST prognosis
- mixed cellularity
- lymphocyte depleted
What are Langerhans cells and what is their function?
Specialized dendritic cells, found predominantly in skin.
Present antigens to naive T cells.
What is Langerhans cell histiocytosis?
Neoplastic proliferation of Langerhans cells
