Lymphedema Flashcards
What are risk factors to lymphatic insufficiency
congenital lymphatic malformation
infection or inflammation
obstruction or fibrosis
dissection of lymph nodes
CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY.
How many stages are there to lymphedema and which is the worst
there are 4 stages. the worst one is stage 4
What is the data collection for lymphatic diseases
similar to venous disease
infection, trauma, surgery, radiation (any hx of it)
exam skin
girth or volumetric measuremtns
determine the stage (1 - 4)
what is the clinical presentation of lymphedema.
Depends on location and severity
- increase in limb size
- MSK repercussions
- sensory disturbances
- increase risk of infection
What is the prevention of lymphedema
lymph sparing.
missing lymph nodes leads to an increase in lymphedema
What are precautions when dealing with patients that have missing lymph nodes?
No modalities, minor trauma, excessive exercise or massage.
What are some management options for lymphedema
Intermittent pneumatic compressions
Comprehensive decongestive therapy
Hydrostatic pressure (pool)
What is comprehensive decongestive therapy
- lymphatic drainage
- compression
- exercise
- elevation
- skin care hygiene.
