Location of Lymph Nodes in the Superior Rectum
Muscular Wall of the Rectum
Lymphatic Drainage of the Superior Rectum
o Vessels drain into the pararectal lymph nodes
o Vessels then drain into the inferior mesenteric lymph nodes via the sacral lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Inferior Rectum
o Drain into the sacral lymph nodes
o Vessels from the rectal ampulla drain into the internal iliac lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Pelvic Organs - Males and Females
o Lymphatic vessels from the uterine tubes and ovaries in females and the testes in males
o Ascend along the gonadal blood vessels to drain into the lateral aortic lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Uterus
o Some vessels drain superiorly with the lymph from the ovaries to reach the lateral aortic lymph nodes
o Other vessels may drain to either the superficial inguinal lymph nodes, the external iliac lymph nodes, the internal iliac lymph nodes or the sacral lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Superior Vagina
• Vessels will drain to either the internal or external iliac lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Middle Vagina
• Vessels will drain to internal iliac lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the Inferior Vagina
• Vessels will drain to the sacral and common iliac lymph nodes
Lymphatic Drainage of the External Orifice
• Vessels will drain to the superficial inguinal lymph nodes
Superficial Lymphatic Vessels: Lower Limb
o Will drain towards and accompany the superficial veins
o Lymph accompanying the short saphenous vein will drain into the popliteal lymph nodes in the popliteal fossa
o Lymph accompanying the great saphenous vein will drain into the superficial inguinal lymph nodes in the superficial fascia
Lateral Superficial Lymphatic Vessels - Lower Limb
o Accompany the lateral marginal vein and short saphenous vein
o Drain the lateral and posterior regions of the leg and food
Medial Superficial Lymphatic Vessels - Lower Limb
o Accompany the medial marginal vein and great saphenous vein
o Drain the medial and anterior regions of the leg and foot and most regions of the thigh
Deep Lymphatic Vessels - Lower Limb
o Accompany the deep veins (anterior tibial, posterior tibial, popliteal, femoral veins)
Leg
o Lymph will drain into the popliteal lymph nodes
Thigh
o Lymph of the entire lower limb will drain into the deep inguinal lymph nodes (located medial to the femoral vein in the femoral triangle)
Lymphatic Vessels of the Lower Limb
- Lymphatic Vessels pass between the superficial and deep inguinal lymph nodes
- Efferent vessels from both the inguinal lymph node groups drain into the external iliac lymph nodes
Superior Inguinal Lymph Nodes: Superior Group
o 5-6 lymph nodes
o Located inferior and parallel to inguinal liganment
o Receive lymph from inferior abdominal wall, gluteal region, external genitalia and perineal region
