Lymphatics Flashcards
1
Q
Lymphatic System
- Primary lymphatic tissues
- Secondary lymphatic tissues
- Maturation of T and B cells
- GALT/BALT/MALT
A
- Bone marrow and thymus
- Lymphoid organs such as the spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes and peyers patches
- T cells move to the thymus to become immunologically competent, and B cells stay, and become immunologically competent, in the bone marrow.
- Gut/Bronchiolar/Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue

Q
Chyle
- What is chyle?
A
- Tissue fluid from intestines. It has fat droplets in it and is milky in appearance.
3
Q
What does the lymphatic system do in relation to…
- Interstitial fluid
- Damaged cells and pathogens
- Infection and cancer
- Indicating problems
A
- Collects interstitial fluid, proteins and cells, and returns them to the blood stream
- Removes them
- Can travel in the lymphatic system. Slow movement of lymph through nodes can result in formation of secondary cancer tumours.
- Swollen lymph nodes can be an indication of problems

Q
Right Lymphatic Duct
- Drains from
- Drains to
A
- Right upper limb, right side of thorax, upper part of right side of abdominal wall, and right side of head and neck
- Right lymphatic duct. Opens into venous system at junction of right subclavian and right jugular veins.
5
Q
Left Lymphatic Duct
- Drains from
- Drains to
- Often referred to as
A
- Left side of head and neck, left side of thorax, left upper limb, left side of abdomen, right side of the abdomen, both sides of the pelvis and both of the lower limbs.
- Junction of left subclavian and left jugular veins.
- Thoracic duct
