Q

Name the functions of the lymphatic system

A

Defend the body against disease by producing lymphocytes; absorbs lipids from the intestines and delivers them to the blood; drainage system collecting and returning intestinal fluids back to the blood

Q

Lymphocytes develop in the ___ or in the ___

A

Thymus gland; bone marrow

19
Q

What are the two types of white blood cells

A

T cells and B cells

20
Q

Lymphocytes produce ____ that help ____

A

Antibodies; destroy bacteria and viruses

21
Q

Filters for lymph

A

Lymph nodes

22
Q

Lymph nodes provide an environment where ___ can gain exposure to bacteria. This exposure causes the ___ to perform ___

A

Lymphocytes; lymphocytes; immune functions

23
Q

Lies behind the sternum and expands upward into the root of the neck

A

Thymus gland

25
Q

Lymphocytes originate from __ in red bone marrow

A

Stem cells

26
Q

Enter and go to lungs, pores, and urinary system

A

Macrophages

27
Q

System of capillaries and tubules

A

Lymphatics

28
Q

Lymphatics drain lymph from where

A

All over the body

29
Q

What is a major lymphatic vessel? Where is it located?

A

Thoracic duct; near lower spine

30
Q

Found in their upper region of the abdomen

A

Spleen

31
Q

Microscopic tubules located between cells

A

Lymph Capillaries

32
Q

List the types of lymphatic vessels

A

Lymph capillaries, lymphatics, lymphatic duct

33
Q

What is the holding tank

A

Cistema chyli

34
Q

Can be found throughout the body, including the neck, armpit, chest, abdomen, pelvis and groin

A

Lymph nodes

35
Q

Largest lymph organ that filters the blood

A

Spleen

36
Q

What is the importance of the lymphatic system part two

A

It returns fluid from tissues to the blood. When a body part becomes swollen, lymph vessels collect excess fluid and carry it to the veins of the lymphatic system

37
Q

Masses of lymphoid tissues; they contain lymphocytes

A

Lymph nodes

41
Q

A pale fluid that is composed of water, protein, salts, glucose, urea, lymphocytes, and other substances

A

Lymph

42
Q

What is the importance of the lymphatic system

A

Without it your blood cannot be cleaned naturally. Because once you start transfusions it begins to mess things up

43
Q

Summarize the lymphatic system process. Reword it so we don’t all have the same answer

A

The lymph drains into open ended one-way lymph capillaries. Lymph moves slower than blood and flows through the lymph sinuses to be filtered. The walls of these capillaries have tiny openings that allows gas, water and chemicals to pass through and take away waste. Lymph leaving the node is cleaner in debris and richer in lymphocytes. Lymph vessels recycle the intestinal fluid and return it to the bloodstream. Macrophages, inside lymph nodes, destroy bacteria removing it from the bloodstream. At the T12 vertebrae, the cisterna chyli narrows and becomes the thoracic duct. Lymphatic vessels from all over the body drain into the thoracic duct. A valve in the thoracic duct keeps the blood from flowing back into the duct.
