Q

What are the four parts of the cardiovascular system in their functions

A

Heart – pumps oxygen and nutrients to the blood
Arteries – pump oxygenated blood away from the heart
Veins – pump deoxygenated blood into the heart Capillaries – control oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion

Q

Describe the process of blood flow

A

Blood enters the first main vein (superior vena cava). It then travels to the right atrium. Blood flow continues on into the tricuspid valve and enters the right ventricle. It bends back up to go into the pulmonary semilunar valve. Blood then enters the pulmonary arteries and goes into the lungs. In the lungs it absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. After exiting the lungs it goes into the pulmonary veins. Blood then goes into the left atrium, then the AV valve. Blood flows into the left ventricle and then another semilunar valve. Blood finally leaves the heart through the aorta.

Q

What makes a heartbeat sound?

A

The heartbeat sounds are due to vibrations in the heart tissues associated with the closing of valves. The first part of the heart sound occurs during ventricular contraction when the AV valves are closing. The second part occurs during ventricular relaxation when the pulmonary and aortic valves are closing.
