Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the primary functions?
- transport lymph
- filter out toxins
- maintain proper amount of water
What does interstitial fluid contain?
- water
- white blood cells
- other substances from blood plasma
What’s another name for interstitial fluid?
Extracellular fluid
What is the process of diapedesis?
White blood cells leave the capillaries and go into the interstitial fluid
When does interstitial fluid become lymph?
Once it enters the lymphatic vessel
What is the function of lymph nodes?
To filter lymph
What do lymph nodes contain?
A lot of white blood cells
What are the two ways that white blood cells fight invaders?
Phagocytosis and by secreting antibodies
What is phagocytosis?
The white blood cell engulfs the invader and destroyed it using enzymes secreted by the cell’s lysosomes
What do antibodies do?
They attach to foreign antigens which stops them from reproducing
What’s the difference between natural and artificial immunity?
Natural: when you become immune to an infection after fighting it off
Artificial: when you become immune to an infection following an injection of a vaccine
