Classification Of Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
What’s a substance?
All particles in matter are identical
What’s a mixture?
Two or more substances physically combined
What’s a compound?
Two or more elements chemically combined
How can a compound be broken down?
By chemical reactions
What’s a homogenous mixture? Give an example
Components are evenly distributed out
ex: solutions
What’s a heterogenous mixture? Give an example
Substances in the mixture are not evenly spread out
ex: colloids and suspensions
What’s a solution?
A homogenous mixture that has the same composition, colour, density and taste throughout
What’s a solute?
Substance that is being dissolved
What’s a solvent?
Substance that the solute is being dissolved in
What’s a colloid?
Small particles remain evenly dispersed throughout the mixture
What’s the Tyndall effect?
The scattering of light as a light beam passes through a colloid
What’s a suspension?
Larger particles that appear uniformly distributed but will settle out of the mixture over time if not being mixed
What’s an alloy?
A solution of metals dissolved in other metals
What is the equation for concentration?
C=M/V
What is solubility?
The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a given temperature
What are the 3 types of solutions?
Unsaturated, saturated and supersaturation
What is an unsaturated solution?
Able to dissolve more solute
Solution is not at maximum capacity
What happens each time a saturated solution is heated to a higher temperature?
It becomes unsaturated and more solute can be added
What’s a saturated solution?
Contains all of the solute it can hold
At maximum capacity
What’s a supersaturated solution?
Contains more solute than it can hold
Above maximum capacity
