Lymphatic System Flashcards
1
Q
Lymph system
A
- helps drain fluid from tissues
2
Q
Lymph vessels
A
- similar to veins
- low pressure
- have valves
3
Q
Lymph System Functions
A
- return of excess fluid to lymph vessels
- defense against disease (Phagocytes)
- transport of absorbed fat
- return of filtered protein
4
Q
Venules
A
- formed when capillary beds unite
- very porous (to fluids + WBCs)
- larger ones have 1-2 layers of smooth muscle
5
Q
Venous Return
A
DECREASED BY:
- venous compliance (ie. stretch ability)
INCREASED BY:
- driving pressure from heart contraction
- sympathetically induced venoconstriction
- skeletal muscle activity
- effect of venous valves
- respiratory activity
- effect of cardiac suction
6
Q
Blood Pressure Control
A
Short term:
- baroreceptors (less firing INC everything)
- cardiovascular system
Long term:
-kidneys (bc of blood volume)
7
Q
Direct Renal Mechanism
A
- alters blood volume independently of hormones
- increased filtration / kidneys eliminate more urine thus reducing BP
- decreased BP = kidneys conserve water = BP rises
8
Q
Indirect Renal Mechanism
A
- Renin-angio mechanism
- DEC bp and release of renin
- renin produces angiostenin II (vasoconstrictor)
- angiostenin – aldosterone secretion - less urine - inc of BP
urine output is controlled – controls BP
