Q

write a note on B, T and NK cells

A

B-> express receptors which bind to antigens on pathogens. can differentiate into plasma cells which secrete antibodies
T-> dont secrete anitbody- secrete soluble factors
NK-> have cytotoxic granules- defense against viruses and certain cancer

13
Q

describe structure of thymus gland

A

2 lobes: corpsucles separated into even smaller lobes by trabeculae (connective tissue)

outer cortex contains Immature T cells (thymocytes) as well as an inner medulla

14
Q

write a note on lymph nodes

A

small and bean shaped . external connective tissue capsule. interior divided into outer and inner medulla. trabeculae in cortex. w

afferent lymph vessel: lymph flows in
reticular network: traps pathogens
leukocytes and dendritic cells eliminate pathogens.
efferent lymph vessels: clean lymph leaves at hilum

16
Q

what is MALT

A

mucosa associated lymphatic tissue = clusters of lymphoid tissue. protects mucous membranes exposed to lots of pathogens like nose and git etc

17
Q

what are examples of MALT

A

tonsils, peyer’s patches, appendix

18
Q

tonsils

A

pharyngeal, palatine, lingual . have tonsillar crypts which = epithelium lining indents which trap bacteria

19
Q

peyer’s patches and appendix

A

peyers pathces = small intesting -> immune response against ingested substances. have specialised endothelial cells M cells which sample material in intestine and transport to follicles which determine to begin immune response.

similar process occurs in MALT in muscoa and submucosa of the appendix

20
Q

what are the two MHC molecules (major histocompatibility complex)

A

MCH class 1 -> intracellular antigens where virus replicates inside cell
MCH class II -> extracellular antigens i.e bacteria from outside cell

21
Q

write a note on mature T cells

A

activated by foreign molecule with MHC molecule.
expression of CD4 or CD8 markers keep T cells in close proximity to APC (antigen presenting cells)

CD4- Helper T cell
CD8- Cytotoxic T cells (induce apoptosis)
