Connective Tissue Classification Flashcards
what are the four categories of connective tissue proper
loose (areolar), dense, reticular, adipose
what are the two types of dense connective tissue proper
irregular and regular
what are the two subdivisions of dense regular connective tissue proper
collagenous and elastic
what are the two categories of specialised connective tissue
vascular - blood /lymph and skeletal bone/cartilage
write a note about loose connective tissue
mostly ground substance, houses fibroblasts and sometimes adipocytes. it surrounds blood vessels, nerves, muscles organs. separates the skin from deeper structures. houses immune cells. extensive blood supply to avascular epithelial tissues
write a note on dense irregular connective tissue
- is stress resistant due to how the collagen fibres are woven.
- predominantly disorganised collagen bundles
- can resist tension on all three planes of movement
- found in dermis of skin (high tension areas)
write a note on dense irregular collagenous connective tissue
arranged into parallel collagen bundles with fibroblasts present between the bundles.
is resistant to tension in only one plane.
constituents of tendons and ligaments that are subject to tension in one plane of movement
write a note on dense regular elastic connective tissue
parallel elastic fibres with randomly orientated collagen fibres
may have a few fibroblasts.
found in walls of organs that have to stretch to form their function for example large blood vessels
write a note on reticular connective tissue
has type 3 collagen. reticular fibres produced by fibroblasts form a fine network that supports blood and lymph. can be found in lymph nodes and spleen for forming nets to catch foreign cells.
is a base membrane constituent
write a note on adipose connective tissue
adipocytes = main cell type with fibroblasts and ECM, however adipocytes can increase in size to a point where fibroblasts and ECM are barely visible.
involved in fat storage + insulation
can have white or brown
