CNS and PNS - Nervous Tissue Flashcards
what is found in the CNS
brain (aka encephalon) + spinal cord
what are the two types of connective tissue found in the CNS
meninges and walls of large blood vessels
what is found in the PNS
branching peripheral cranial and spinal nerves and relay centres (ganglia)
what are the two subdivisions of the PNS
somatic and autonomic nervous system
what is the somatic nervous system
is under voluntary control- transmits signals to organs i.e skeletal muscle
what is the autonomic nervous system
controls involuntary functions i.e heart rate/blood pressure. consists of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands
what are the two basic cells in nervous tissue
neurons and neuroglial cells (collective name)
what is the function of neurons
receive and transmit impulses
what is the function of neuroglia
support, protect and assist neurons in neural transmission. these cells are not involved in impulse reception/transmission
