Lymphatic system Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system
A network of tissues, vessels and organs that together move Lymph back into the circulatory system.
What are the important roles of the lymphatic system
- Transportation of anigen presenting cells to the **secondary lymphoid tissues **FOR antigen recognition and initation of the adaptive immune response.
- Production AND maturatin of leukocytes and lymphtocytes in primary lymphoid tissues.
- Removal and filtration of fluid from tissues around the body
- Absorption of fatty acids from the digestive system
What are the major components of the lymphatic system, and for the two what are the main types of ____
PRIMARY lymphoid tissues - thymus and bone marrow
SECONDARY lymphoid tissues- lymph nodes and spleen
Lymphatic vessels
Why does lymph nodes swell up when sick
Why lymph filtration useful
When there is an infection, more pathogens are found in the lymph fluid, so more immune cells are attracted to the lymph nodes
What is the difference bwtween primary and secondary tissue
Primary, where leukocytes are produced and matured
whereas secondary is responsibile for draining and filtering the lymph
Where are ALL immune cells MADE
Bone marrow
What is the primary lymphoid tissue
They are responsibile in creating and maturing lymphocytes
What are the lymphocytes made in primary tissue
NK CELLS, B CELLS, T CELLS
Where does B cells and T cells get produced at and mature at
B cells- Prod at bone marrow and matured
Tcells- Prod at bone marrow and matured at thymus
What do Secondary lymphoid tissues do
Responsible for maintining mature lymphocytes and initate the adapative immune response
What do lymphnodes do
The passing lymphocytes scan the lymph nodes for any potential pathogens and APC to initate the adaptive immune response
how does lymph move thru the lymphatic system?
Via lymphatic vessels, thin walled structues that carry the lymph by the contraction of surrounding muscles to push it unidirectly by closing and opening vavles within.
What vessel does lymph come into lymph nodes and leave
Goes in- Afferent vessels
Leaves- efferent vessels
What cells cluster in cortex
B cells
