Lymphatic System Flashcards
Describe one role of lymph nodes
To filter foreign particles by trapping them
Describe one role of bone marrow
Provide leukocytes
What is the difference between a lymph vessel and a blood vessel?
Blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to virtually all cells in developing mammalian embryos and adults, whereas lymphatic vessels drain the interstitial fluid that collects in tissues. Lymph vessels also contain valves while blood vessels do not.
Name the 5 major lymph nodes
Spleen, Thymus, Tonsils & Adenoids, Peters patches, appendix
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
To maintain fluid balance
What are lymph nodes?
Are swellings at intervals along the lymph vessels, that filter out damages cells, pathogens and cancer cells.
What is the composition of lymph fluid?
lymphocytes, bacteria, cellular debris, plasma proteins, and other cells.
How does the lymphatic system return tissue fluid to the circulatory system?
through 2 collecting ducts.
the thoraic duct
How does the lymphatic system assist in protecting the body from disease?
FilterForeign particles, activates the body’s immune response, transports immune cells and antigens and drains excess fluid.
Discuss the relationship between the lymphatic system and the circulatory system in maintaining fluid balance within the body.
What are some disorders or conditions associated with the dysfunction of the lymphatic system?
