Lymphatic System Flashcards
what are the two parts of the lymphatic system
ducts and fluid lymph
lymphoid organs and tissues
what picks up some of the fluid leaked from capillaries
system of ducts
where do lymph ducts carry lymph to, where it is processed and returned to systemic blood
blood vessels near the heart
lymphoid organs and tissues are scattered through out the body and involved in what
immune response to help fight foreign invaders in the animals body
what are the lymphatic organs
lymph nodes
spleen
thymus
tonsils
GALT
what does GALT stand for
gut associated lymph tissue
four primary functions of the lymphatic system
removal or excess tissue fluid
waste material transport
filtration of lymph
protein transport
interstitial fluid can build up due to inadequate lymph drainage to an area
edema (excess fluid accumulation)
what does lymph nodes filter from interstitial fluid that enters lymphatic capillaries
microorganisms, cellular debris, other foreign matter
what can lymph pick up and deposit them into the systemic circulation
protein molecules
lymph starts out as excess tissue fluid that is picked up by small lymph capillaries found where
in interstitial spaces of soft tissue
how does fluid enter and leave blood capillaries
blood pressure and osmotic pressure
many lymph vessels have what that prevent the lymph from flowing backward
one way valve
what does the one way valve in lymph vessels do for the lymph
allows body movements to propel it toward the heart
what do lymph vessels eventually form, that empties lymph into the vena cava just before it enters the heart
thoracic duct
