Lymph and immune system Flashcards
what is the function of the lymph system?
to restore interstitial tissue fluid to the blood
to filter pathogens targeted by the immune system
pathway of flow of lymph
from capillary beds, interstitial fluid enters lymph capillaries, called lymph, moves through lymph nodes and vessels toward the heart and dumps into the veins in the upper neck/thorax.
components of the lymph system gross
lymph vessels-
endothelium wall, valves exist like in veins, Lymph nodes
Contains reticular CT
(with reticular fibers)
- Lymph flows through
- Pathogens are filtered out by immune cells
Leukocytes
these are white blood cells, immune cells, most are located in the lymph system
what are they types of leukocytes
Macrophages- engulf foriegn cells, marks them with antigen , not specific to one type of antigen
Lymphocytes- - Recognizes & attacks one specific type of antigen
- Must be activated first (e.g. by macrophage)
Lymphoid tissue
Common in places where pathogens may enter e.g. MALT in the mucous producing organ systems of the digestive, urinary, reproductive tracts
Lymphoid organs
- Primary lymphoid organs (where lymphocytes are made -Secondary lymphoid organs (contain mature lymphocytes) • Lymph nodes • Spleen • Tonsils • Peyer’s • Appendix
