placed after a noun to indicate that the noun is the direct object of the verb’s action
compare to:
- subject marking particle, where the noun becomes the subject of the sentence (meaning that the verb will be “about” the noun, but no action is being transferred to the noun)
- topic marking particle, which tells the listener that the noun is being compared to something else; or that the noun is being brought into the conversation for the first time
NOTE: particles are often dropped in casual speech if the meaning of the sentence is clearly understood
