Luting and Adhesion E2 Flashcards
What are the objectives of cementation?
Maintain restoration in place and integrity of remaining tooth.
How is retention achieved?
Friction, adhesive joint, cement, restoration.
Difference between provisional and definitive luting agents.
Provisional re low strength and easy handling. Definitive remain in function for longest time possible.
How do luting agents set?
Via acid base reactions and polymerization.
What was buonocore responsible for?
Found that acid etching enamel increases the bond strength of resin to enamel.
What is the composition of dentin?
50% mineralized apatite crystals, 20% water, 30% organic matrix.
What is the issue with sclerotic dentin when trying to bond.
It is acid-resistant.
What will happen to the collagen fibers of dentin upon over-drying?
That will collapse, loosing their structure.
What is the hybrid layer?
Structure formed in dental hard tissues by demineralization of the surface and subsurface, followed by infiltration of monomers and subsequent polymerization.
What is the composition of dentin adhesives?
Primers made of hydrophilic monomer (HEMA) and water soluble solvent. Adhesive is unfilled or lightly filled resin (Bis-GMA)
Explain the 4th generation.
Etchant is removing smear layer via acid. Then the primer and adhesive in separate steps and bottles. Primer is ethanol based.
Explain the 5th generation.
Etchant is removing smear layer via acid. The primer and adhesive are combined in the same bottle. Primer is ethanol based.
Explain the 6th generation.
Dissolving of the smear layer with self etching primer that is water based and separate adhesive.
What are some of the benefits with the 6th generation bonding?
Higher bonding strengths in deep dentin and bonds well to cut enamel.
Explain the 7th generation. Is it good?
It is everything in one bottle. Not good to use.
