Lungs embryology Flashcards
When do the lungs start to develop?
- 4th week of embryogenesis
Where does the development of the lungs start from?
- The primitive gut tube (foregut)
- this arises from the endoderm
What does the foregut give rise to?
- The respiratory diverticulum
- emerges from the ventral wall of foregut
What other parts of the respiratory system are endodermal in origin?
- larynx
- trachea
- bronchi
- lungs
epithelium lining from endoderm
What parts arise from the splanchnic mesoderm?
- cartilage
- muscular + connective tissue
splachnic mesoderm surrounds the foregut
Initially the diverticulum is continous with the foregut. How do they become seperated?
- Tracheoesophageal septum
- mesodermal folds + tracheoesophageal folds
trachea + lungs buds are ventral and esophagus is dorsal
How does the respiratory primordium maintain its communication with the pharynx?
- through the laryngeal orifice
What causes tracheoesophageal fistulas + esophageal atresia
clinical note
- Incomplete formation of the tracheoesophageal septum
How are primary bronchi formed?
- the diverticulum bifurcates to form the let and righr primary bronchi
How is the bronchial tree developed?
- primary bronchi proliferate to give secondary bronchi
- these divide to form 10 tertiary bronchi: bronchopulmonary segments
- branching is regulated by epithelial-mesenchymal interactions
How many lobes do the bronchi have?
Right: upper, middle and lower
Left: upper and lower
How are the pleural layers developed?
- Visceral pleura: arises from splachnic mesoderm
- Parietal pleura: arises from somatic mesoderm
- space between is pleural cavity
parietal = outer, visceral = inner
What is the pseudoglandular period?
- 5-16 weeks
- branching continues to from terminal bronchioles
- no respiratory bronchioles or alveoli
ductus arteriosus shunts blood from pulmonary artery to aortic arch
What is the canalicular period?
- 16-26 weeks
- terminal bronchiole divide into respiratory bronchiole
What is the terminal sac period?
- 26 weeks ⇒ birth
- alveoli start to develop
