7
Q

Why is oxygen a vasoconstrictor in the systemic circulation?

A

As more blood is supplied to areas of less oxygen and therefore more oxygen, and the vessels constrict

8
Q

Why is oxygen a vasodilator in the pulmonary circulation?

A

Less blood flows to areas of the lungs that are poorly contributing to gas exchange and therefore less oxygen, and the vessels constrict

Q

In a foetus, where is most of the oxygen coming from?

A

The placenta

10
Q

Why does blood flow to the placenta for oxygen and not the lungs?

A

As the placenta has a lower resistance so blood flows here to collect oxygen

13
Q

What does the ductus venous do?

A

Passes fetal blood from the placenta, past the liver to the inferior vena cava to be pumped around the body

14
Q

What does the foramen ovale do?

A

Shunts blood between the right and left atria as it does not need to be pumped to the lungs as it is already oxygenated

15
Q

What does the ductus arteriosus do?

A

Shunts blood from the pulmonary artery to the descending aorta as there is a high resistance of blood going to the lungs as no need

16
Q

What happens when the umbilical cord is cut?

A

Source of oxygen is gone and the lungs have a little oxygen in them so this attracts blood, causing the baby to breathe

17
Q

What happens to the pressure in the circulation when the baby is born?

A
  • Increase in systemic circulation pressure

- Decrease in pulmonary circulation pressure

18
Q

What happens to the fluid in the foetus’ lungs when it is born?

A

It is actively secreted by lungs through channels that shift from secretory to absorptive
